April Holiday through the Eyes of Jeremy

School holidays are a joyous time for children worldwide. In America, families often take vacations or embark on trips to create cherished memories. In Kenya, while holidays also bring families together, many households face financial constraints that make such outings an unattainable luxury. Yet, these breaks remain a treasured opportunity for children to bond with loved ones, contribute to household tasks, and embrace the simple joys of community and family life.

For instance, Jeremy, a 13-year-old in Grade 9, lives in rural Kenya with his parents and siblings. His family of six includes his elder siblings, Sarah and Kelvin, who attend boarding school, and his younger brother, Abel, who is in preparatory school. During the school term, it's just Jeremy, Abel, and their parents at home. But holidays bring the family together, filling their home with lively conversation and laughter.
This Easter holiday, Jeremy's daily routine offers a glimpse into the life of a sponsored child in Kenya. Unlike school days, when he wakes up at 5 a.m., holidays allow him to rise at 6:30 a.m.—a small luxury. Jeremy begins his day with a prayer, a habit he cherishes from Sunday school teachings to “always put God first.” He then sweeps the compound and makes a quick trip to the bustling local market for milk and sugar.
Breakfast is a shared moment of connection, often followed by a morning filled with chores. Laundry comes second after doing the dishes, a task they share with his elder sister. As this is the rainy planting season, Jeremy and his siblings often join their parents in tilling their small plot of land. The satisfaction of planting seeds for the future highlights the season's significance. On days when they’re not farming, Jeremy helps babysit Abel—a task filled with moments of play and laughter or fetching water from a nearby water pan.

The afternoon brings a mix of relaxation and focus. After lunch, Jeremy follows his self-made holiday timetable, dedicating time to holiday assignments and revision, often with guidance from his elder siblings. His determination is palpable as he dreams of becoming a teacher, a goal he believes will allow him to inspire others. Later, he helps with dinner preparation, often running quick errands for his parents as the day winds down.

Jeremy’s story illustrates resilience, resourcefulness, and the strong family bonds woven into the fabric of Kenyan life. His daily activities reflect a culture where children take pride in contributing to their families, no matter their circumstances. When asked about his sponsors, Jeremy smiles and shares, I’m grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow, knowing that their support is paving the way for my dreams.”
As you reflect on Jeremy’s story, know that your generosity empowers children like him to thrive despite challenges. Your role in their lives extends beyond education—it’s a partnership that nurtures their dreams and transforms communities. Together, we can continue making a lasting impact, ONE CHILD AT A TIME.
