Tumaini Response to COVID-19 Pandemic in Kenya

Although the COVID-19 cases are relatively low in Kenya compared to most of the Western countries, both the healthcare and economic impact is beginning to weigh heavily on the majority of the poor. This is especially due to the 7:00 pm-5:00 am curfew and partial lockdown that has been imposed.

As of April 22nd, there were 303 confirmed cases and 14 deaths. We continue to monitor the direct impact on our sponsored children and their families and so far there are no reported cases. We are offering basic services as needed but our biggest push this week continues to be the provision of additional revision materials for our 8th and 12th-grade candidates. The government announced that the national exit exams remain as scheduled in October and November.

We are sorry to inform you that due to the ongoing situation with the COVID-19, summer vision trips that were planned for June and July this year are canceled. We know the groups and individuals who signed up to go are disappointed and so are we as these trips are integral to our partnership and growth. However, we are concerned that even if things were to get better on the stateside, Kenya’s coronavirus cases are actually on the rise and the country is still not allowing international flights in. Furthermore, they have imposed a 14 mandatory quarantine at the port of entry. This hurdle defeats the purpose of vision trips because most travelers can only be away for two weeks. We believe that everything is in God’s hand and there will be other opportunities in the future.

If you are able and would like to make a donation to our Hope Fund it will go along way to help us do our best to reach all our students with any extra support they need at this important time in their lives.
