Jacinta and Baraka!
Jacinta is a 35-year-old single mother to Baraka, one of the children in the Tumaini sponsorship program. Raising a child alone has been a difficult journey, as she has to work tirelessly to make ends meet. In many African cultures, single mothers often face stigma, even from their own families. Jacinta was no exception. Unable to find support at home, she moved to a nearby town in search of a job that would allow her to provide for her son.
Without relevant skills she could not secure a job opportunity in the formal sector. Eventually, she got a casual job as a waitress at a local hotel that earned her just a little income that allowed her to rent a small room and put food on the table. However, when Baraka started schooling, the financial burden became overwhelming. She struggled to meet all her child’s School needs, but she refused to give up, working harder despite the challenges. Then, in 2023, she received a life-changing opportunity, her son was sponsored through Tumaini.
“I was introduced to Tumaini by a friend in 2022, and less than a year after sharing my story, I received news that my son was sponsored. Tumaini promised to cover his school fees, provide uniforms annually, and partner with me to ensure he had the resources to excel in his studies. It was such a relief to me,” says Jacinta.
In 2024, Baraka’s sponsor, Eric, gifted the family a cow and two goats. That same year, South Hills Church’s mission to Kenya blessed them with a decent home.
“All I can say is that I am a beneficiary of God’s favor. The animals are an incredible investment in Baraka’s future. I’ve committed to nurturing them so they multiply, and any sales from their products or offspring go directly into an account I’ve created for him. This will ensure that, even if sponsorship ends after high school, he will still have the financial support to pursue his dreams,” she explains.
Jacinta’s foresight and determination are truly inspiring. She understands that sponsorship may not last forever and she is working hard to create a sustainable future for her son. This gift has transformed her family's life, providing not only immediate relief but also a long-term financial plan for Baraka’s education. Her story highlights the immense impact that sponsorships and gifts have, not just on the children but on their guardians as well. By equipping families with resources, we empower them to break the cycle of poverty and build sustainable household development.
