She has walked a long journey to be where she is today. When she was born, Winfred was a healthy baby. Her single mother is intellectually disabled so Winfred was raised by her aunt. By the time she was in 5th grade, things became tough for her aunt and she was sponsored by Carla. Unfortunately, when Winfred was in 9th grade, she fell ill with severe meningitis. Our medical personnel at Tumaini Medical Clinic could not offer Winfred much help and she was transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital where she was hospitalized for about a year. Although Winfred recovered, the long-term effect made it difficult to fully walk again. After being discharged from the hospital, she was unable to resume school due to being hospitalized for one year. Instead, she opted to pursue her childhood interest in bead work. She joined a vocational school to learn how to do bead work professionally and created a career befitting her new physical abilities. After successfully completing her course, she was awarded a $50 grant from Tumaini to start her business. Today, Winfred makes baskets and wallets, and on average earns $30 in monthly revenue. This is not a lot of money, but Winfred is grateful because she knows she is one of the few people in her village fully sustaining herself. “I cannot compare what I make monthly to making nothing. From my earnings, I can buy food, clothes, and provide for myself.” Thank you Carla for giving Winfred a reason to keep fighting and making a career no matter the circumstances.
