She didn’t even dream of high school—until someone said yes.
In Saumu’s rural village, most homes are made of mud. A high school education is rare. Poverty is everywhere. Girls often remain home. Idle. Forgotten. Many become young mothers before they’ve had a chance to grow up themselves. And the cycle of poverty continues.
That was Saumu’s path—until someone stepped in.
At 16, she was sponsored through Tumaini. That single act of generosity gave her the chance to attend high school, and it changed everything. She studied hard, excelled, and began tutoring younger children in her community. With just a high school education, she’s already lifting others up.
Now, thanks to her sponsors Mike and Kathy, the cost barrier to college has been removed. Saumu plans to become a teacher, specializing in business and history. She’s deeply grateful to Mike and Tumaini—and she’s determined to give back.
But here’s the heartbreak: Saumu is one of only a few 2025 Tumaini graduates with the support to continue their education. There are 100 students still waiting for someone to bridge the gap.
The Tumaini Gala is your chance to change that. Join us on September 27 at 5:30 PM in Anaheim Hills for an unforgettable evening of Kenyan culture, student stories, and hands-on impact.
Reserve your seat now - Every seat reserved helps us prepare to launch another student to college! Can’t attend? You can still give hope. Support the Alumni Fund to help students like Saumu pursue college, trade programs, or launch small businesses.
Tumaini’s mission is clear: end the cycle of poverty through education. Saumu’s story is proof—it’s working. But we need you to keep it going.
Let’s make sure she’s not the only one.
