A Family on a Mission: Meet the Larsons

Dear Tumaini Family,

Every so often, we meet a donor family whose story reminds us why this work matters so deeply. This week, we’re honored to share the journey of Greg and Kieu Larson, along with their children, Olivia and Max—a family whose “yes” to sponsoring one child has grown into a mission that is shaping their home, their values, and their understanding of hope.

When the Larsons first decided to sponsor a child through Tumaini, they weren’t sure what to expect. Like many people, they wondered whether committing $40 a month for several years might feel overwhelming. But as Kieu shared in her interview, “Child sponsorship is a much easier journey than most people feel.” Once they saw the impact their support had on a child’s life, the commitment felt small compared to the transformation it made possible.

Their sponsored son, Duncan, quickly became more than a name on a profile. Through letters and photos, the Larsons began to know him—his interests, his dreams, his challenges. Olivia loved getting to “meet” Duncan through his updates, and Max enjoyed learning bits of Swahili so he could better understand Duncan’s world. What began as a simple act of generosity soon became a meaningful connection for their entire family.

Then came a moment that changed everything. The Larsons learned that Duncan did not have a safe place to live. Without hesitation, Greg and Kieu shared the need with their children, and together the family decided they wanted to help. Olivia and Max were the first to say, “We can do something.” And they did. The Larsons rallied together and personally raised the funds needed to build a safe home for Duncan and his family—an act of compassion that will impact generations.

Today, the Larsons remain deeply committed to Duncan and to Tumaini’s mission. They talk often about how sponsorship has expanded their children’s worldview, teaching them empathy, generosity, and the joy of helping others. What started as a willingness to help one child access education has become a family mission—one that continues to shape their lives in beautiful ways.

You’ll see the Larson family at our 25‑Year Anniversary Gala, so be sure to say hello. Their story is a reminder that when one family steps forward in love, hope multiplies.

Your family can make this kind of impact too.

If you feel stirred by the Larsons’ story, we invite you to take the next step:

Sponsor a child as a family and begin a journey that will shape your home and transform a child’s future.

Or make a one‑time gift to the Hope Fund to meet urgent needs for vulnerable children in Kenya.
