Monica , 28 years old now a wife and mother of a two-year-old daughter was sponsored when she was in grade 7. Her elder sister had been sponsored earlier after their mother died leaving the two little girls under the care of an aging and destitute grandmother. Their aunt introduced the girls to Tumaini and Monica was sponsored by Peggy. Being sponsored changed everything for Monica. She recently shared about her life changing experience: “Life was not the same again. Being sent home for school fees was a thing of the past. Tumaini sponsored my primary (Elementary) education through  high school and college. I joined Kenya Institute of Management college where I graduated with a Diploma in Procurement in 2018.”  Monica’s passion, however,  was in starting her own business. So, in 2021 she started a small-scale business of Selling clothes. Monica was focused and determined to succeed and soon she was earning a monthly net profit of $50, a small amount but a great start. Today, she earns a monthly net profit of $200 and is on the upward swing. Monica recalls that her training in procurement policies has become handy as she is now able to procure stock from the suppliers confidently and keep her books of account in a professional manner.

Monica is grateful to Tumaini for giving her a hand up. She has not forgotten where she came from: “To my sponsor Peggy, thank you so much for trusting in my ability. May God bless you and your family in a huge way!”

Monica’s tragedy has been turned around by a simple act of love by Peggy through child sponsorship. Every day, Monica’s story is changing from that of a destitute girl to now an educated mother, wife, and a budding  businesswoman. That is what child sponsorship does. It only costs $38 a month to give a destitute boy or girl like Monica a hand up and completely change their story.
