Dear Tumaini Partner,

Every year on Global Accessibility Awareness Day, people around the world reflect on how technology can open doors—or quietly close them. While GAAD focuses on digital accessibility for people with disabilities, its deeper message is about ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to participate in an increasingly digital world.

At Tumaini, we see that truth lived out in our school every day. Through the computer lab at Tumaini International Girls High School and the digital‑learning requirements of Kenya’s Competency‑Based Curriculum, students who once had little or no exposure to technology are now gaining the digital skills they need to thrive.

For many of our learners—especially those from rural communities—Tumaini is the first place they’ve ever used a computer, created an email account, or accessed online learning. One of our students, Purity, shared:

“I came from a remote area where technology was not known. When I joined Tumaini in 2025, I was introduced to computer classes. This is when I created my first email account and began using it to support my academic work.”

Purity’s experience is shared by many. Technology at Tumaini is what makes participation in the modern world possible. Students research assignments online, submit work through email, join virtual classes during school breaks, and use digital tools to explore ideas that once felt out of reach. These are foundational skills for higher education and the modern workplace.

Our teachers also benefit. Digital resources and online tools allow them to prepare lessons more effectively, present concepts visually, and support diverse learning needs. Technology helps them teach with clarity, creativity, and confidence.

This Global Accessibility Awareness Day, we celebrate the simple but profound truth that access changes futures. And because of your generosity, students who once stood on the margins of the digital world are now stepping into it with courage, curiosity, and hope.
