A few Friday's ago in Kenya, I walked into an elementary school and saw nine children standing outside the gate. Their faces pressed against the bars, peering back into the classrooms and schoolyard they longed to rejoin.

They didn’t want to go home. At home, lunch was uncertain. At school, they would have had a meal, a chance to learn, and the joy of playing with friends.

But in Kenya, schools review their student payment accounts on Fridays. If school fees aren’t paid, children are called out of class and sent home. That morning, these nine had been sent away.

I asked the principal to check their accounts. She read the balances aloud: 500 shillings, 550 shillings, 400 shillings… In total, 4,400 shillings. Just $35...about $4 per child.

That amount would cover all nine children for the rest of the semester—three more weeks of learning, meals, and hope.

Yet beyond that? Their families had no way to pay. And Tumaini couldn’t take their names for sponsorship right then. Why? Because over 100 children are already waiting sponsorship. Some have been waiting nearly a year. We cannot give false hope.
