“Receiving a water tank has been life-changing for me and my family” said Patricia, one of the beneficiaries of our water tanks. She continued: “Before I received a water tank from Tumaini, I used to purchase water or walk long distances to fetch it. Now, I can collect rainwater, and this has reduced the cost of maintaining my kitchen garden. And now, I have enough time to focus on other productive activities around my home.”
One of Tumaini’s three pillars is socio-economic development programs through which we offer programs to help alleviate communities from extreme poverty. Often these are the same regions where we do child sponsorship, so the result is a comprehensive community development. These vulnerable communities form coops popularly known as Community Based Organizations (CBOs). We are currently partnering with thirteen of these coops. Majority of the members are vulnerable women and unemployed youth. In most villages, water remains a major challenge because SE Kenya is a semi and arid area that relies on sporadic rainfall, both for domestic and agricultural purposes. Many communities rely on distant and often contaminated water sources, due to inadequate infrastructure and a lack of water reservoirs. However, rainwater is a source of clean water and if tapped, families can have a steady supply of clean water that can last for months, or until the next rainy season. Last year Tumaini launched a project of supplying rainwater to CBO members. So far, we have distributed 27 water tanks, each with a capacity of 10,000 liters benefiting some 1080 people.
We have witnessed many benefits from this endeavor including improved public health, improved hygiene, and sanitation, food security by promoting kitchen gardens, and more.
We remain deeply committed to partnering with CBOs to invest in economic empowerment programs aimed at equipping guardians with practical skills, improved household incomes, and promoting food security. These efforts are restoring dignity and transforming lives; one community at a time.
Given the economic transformation that these tanks are bringing to the beneficiaries , we plan to supply more tanks as funds become available. If you would like to help a CBO with one or several water tanks, please contact us for further information. The cost of a 10,000 liter water tank is roughly $700 and you can simply use the button below to direct your gift to help purchase more! As always, thank you to each one of you for your prayers and financial support that make these efforts possible. Changing the life of one child at a time, one village at time.
Eternally grateful,
